We Came, We Ran, We Conquered…
… and I feel like crap. My muscles and joints ache from running the 10km that I had foolishly signed up for in the Kuala Lumpur International Marathon 2007 Fun Run category. In my current condition, I really can’t see where the ‘fun’ was.
I’ve never liked running and it has never been my forte. I hate the treadmill.
Strangely enough, I joined, I ran, and I finished the race within the qualifying time of 80 minutes. Or at least I think I did. I forgot to look at the big giant clock as I crossed the finish line. That being the case, I’m sticking with the story that I finished in time.
WL did even better. She completed her 10km run in 1 hour 10 minutes, well ahead of the 90 minutes qualifying time for the ladies category. She even has a medal to prove it for coming in 218th place. The top 500 finishers in each category were given medals. However, both her big toes are bruised from the abuse and she’ll probably lose a toenail.
Despite that fact, WL is elated at her achievement and no doubt she’ll be wanting to join again. When I asked if it was worth it, her response was definitely. I commend her for her enthusiasm. That is the woman that I fell in love with.
I didn’t walk away empty handed. I have a certificate from FTAAA for finishing the circuit and I’ve learned to appreciate the convenience of having a car and not to curse traffic. Why, you might ask?
Well, it would have taken me no more than 15 minutes to drive the 10km track that we ran, even through normal KL traffic. 20 minutes into the race, I had barely covered 3km and was at the bottom of a hill, dreading the prospect of having to grind my way to the top. Get the picture?
So there. We came, we ran, and we conquered. An achievement of sorts. Will I ever do it again? I don’t know. Maybe. Highly likely if WL has any say in it. See you in 2008.

A marathon!!!
I’m always amazed by marathoners. And I always remember the first runner of a marathon died. Take care of yourself.
