Taking A Break
I’m on leave today. A much needed break from the buzz of work. The last couple of weeks have been crazy in terms of frustrations and deadlines. Throw a flu bug into the mix and you’ve got yourself two very ugly weeks.
For those who have collaborated across timezones, I’m sure you know the frustration that can arise. Communication is slow, difficult, and painful. At times, it absolutely breaks down. And that’s not even taking into consideration the cultural differences and language. That’s what I’ve had to deal with in my latest project.
I was sick on the first two days of the week. While I was down with a fever and sick enough to qualify for medical leave, the schedule did not allow it. So I wound up working through the cough, sniffles, and burning brow. “Hold the line”, my boss had said. Easier said than done, under the circumstances. Fortunately, the line was held… to a certain degree. Although the due date is pass, I think there’s more to be done. I dread heading back into the office on Monday. Hopefully there aren’t any more unpleasant surprises waiting for me.
But that’s in the past. I’m currently in the IBM main office, checking out the facilities. It’s pretty cool. Especially when I don’t have to work while everyone else around buzzing around like busy bees. Gives you the impression of being inside a giant hive. I actually came by the office to drop off some documents and it took me about 15 minutes to find the exit out of the 17th floor. Blame it on my bad sense of direction.
Anyway, I think I’ve overstayed. Time to go home to grab my sweats and hit the gym. Have a good weekend ahead.
